It may be several months away before the actual British & Irish Lions squad is announced but the big news this week saw they confirmation of the coaching team which will support the players on their 2013 Tour of Australia.
With Warren Gatland already confirmed as head coach, joining him will be 2009 coaches, Graham Rowntree and Rob Howley, who themselves are both previous Lions and so will know what it takes to pull on the famous red shirt. Rowntree will be in charge of forwards coaching whilst Howley will continue his position as backs coach. A new addition to the coaching set-up, Andy Farrell has been drafted in to bring new ideas to the game in his role as defence coach.
Speaking at the time of the announcement, Gatland was full of praise for his coaching team but did not underestimate the significance of the challenge laying ahead for all those involved both on and off the pitch. ”Lions tours are unique as we have to mould together players from four different countries in an incredibly short space of time” commented Gatland. ”Using the experience from 2009, which we felt we learned a heck of a lot from, we wanted to keep some continuity with coaches and add a bit of freshness as well. We were disappointed not to come away with a series win in South Africa.”
With the British & Irish Lions tour kicking-off in Hong Kong on June 1st, the countdown is really on now and all eyes will be on the Six Nations as this will prove a decisive competition for all players looking to make the squad.
