England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster has today announced a preliminary squad of 20 for the forthcoming match against the Barbarians and the tour to New Zealand. From the list of players announced, there is one name in particular that stands out from the rest; Danny Cipriani.
The Sale fly-half has been rewarded for his fine form this season and looks set to add to his seven caps, the last of which was won back in 2008, during the coming weeks. Over the past 12 months the former London Wasps and Melbourne Rebels man’s game management has improved dramatically whilst his kicking game has also excelled. He finished the season with 143 Aviva Premiership points which helped the Sharks to a 6th place finish.
Other noticeable inclusions are that of Cipriani’s club team mate Michael Paterson, young Exeter Chiefs hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie and relegated Worcester full-back Chris Pennell.
Players from Premiership semi-finalists Saracens, Northampton, Leicester and Harlequins have not been considered along with those from Bath and Wasps as they have European fixtures to fulfil in the coming weekends.
Lancaster will call up additional players to the squad dependant on which two teams make the Premiership final. A travelling party of 42 are expected to visit New Zealand.
