It has been five years since he played Super Rugby, but Carlos Spencer has joined South African side, the Lions.
The former All Black has joined the capital side for this year’s Super 14 in what is reportedly one of the biggest ever contracts in South African rugby.
Supersport website believes Spencer will earn more money than Argentina’s Juan Martin Hernandez will receive for playing for the Sharks.
The 34-year-old will also be the skills coach for the Lions Currie Cup side and is viewed as a replacement for the Springbok fly-half Andre Pretorius, who recently left for Western Force.
Spencer moved to Kingsholm last year from their Guinness Premiership rivals Northampton.
The former Test pivot made more than 100 appearances for Saints, but his Gloucester first-team opportunities have been limited.
