It is a busy time of the year for Ulster and Ireland back row forward Stephen Ferris; currently representing his national side in the Six Nations and once the competition is over, going back to club rugby for an important Heineken Cup quarter final with rivals Munster.
It is sure to be an intense 12 months for Ferris who will be looking to show that he is worthy of a place in the British and Irish Lions squad for their tour of Australia in the summer of 2013. Ferris’s last Lions tour back in 2009 was cut short due to injury so the flanker will be looking to make up for lost time if he happens to make the cut.
We had the opportunity to ask Ferris a few questions about his rugby career, past and present:
What has been the highlight of your season so far?
Making the quarter finals of the European cup with Ulster. I missed out last year due to injury so hopefully I can stay fit and play against Munster.
As a young rugby player in Ulster, who was you greatest inspiration?
When I played years ago the only people that gave all of their time to me were my parents. They travelled with me all over the country to different games and for me to have made it as a pro has made them very proud.
What was the proudest moment of your career to date?
The year of 2009 as I won the Grand Slam with Ireland and then got selected for the Lions. It was unbelievable.
What advice would you give to any young player coming through now?
To enjoy every second of it and make as many friends as possible over how long your journey is. Also score lots of try’s and make big hits to keep the fans happy.
How important are the right supplements and training regimes in the modern game?
Without the right supplements and training programmes I would definitely not be where I am right now. It’s essential that you are big and strong for the game of rugby and by using the right supplements this can be made easier.
How long you been using Kinetica products?
A few years ago I started using Kinetica. Every year since turning pro I have been getting stronger in the gym and fitter on the pitch. The right product is essential and it is all about recovering as fast you can so that you can get back in the gym/on the pitch as quickly as possible and do a better session than the previous one. The right nutrition is key.
What products do you use and why?
It varies throughout the year. Obviously whey protein is a stable and Kinetica Whey is fully tested, tastes great and naturally flavoured. Pre-season I use the Oat Gain for about 4 – 6 weeks while we are bulking. During the season I use 100% recovery after pitch sessions as it has all the nutrients I need to replace glycogen and repair damaged muscle tissue. After a weights session I generally use Complete due to its clean source of carbs, good fats through the addition of coconut oil, and buckets of Glutamine and leucine which are important for muscle repair. Everyday, no matter what time of the season I use Omega 3’s and ZMA. I use Kinetica Omega 3 because of their high strength and the ratio of EPA:DHA. Kinetica ZMA is amazing, I sleep like a baby afterwards!
Finally, Ulster versus Munster Heineken Cup prediction? Come on, be honest!
Obviously concentrating hard on international duties at the minute but Ulster are playing well and I don’t think there is much between the two sides. The best team on the day will win. Let’s hope it’s Ulster
