O’leary injury opens Lions scrum half chase

Here at Lovell Rugby we have had a look at the Front runners for the replacement scrum half position for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa after the unfortunate ankle injury suffered by Munster’s and Ireland’s Tomas O’leary. The Irish scrum half was one of 3 scrum halfs orginally selected for the squad but fractured his ankel playing for Munster in the Magners league.

The Contenders

Dwayne Peel- Sale Sharks and WalesBoots Puma King XL

Dwayne Peel, first choice for the Lions four years ago in New Zealand, has fallen in the pecking order slightly after losing the Welsh number nine shirt to Osprey’s Mike Phillips. The move to the Sale Sharks resulted in a poor early season form. However, towards the end of season he was clearly showing signs of rediscovering his World class form. A lively scrum half with quality survive, who has played lots of Rugby for Lions number ten contender Stephen Jones.

Danny Care- Harlequins and EnglandBoots Nike Laser 2 boots

Danny Care rose from a young Premiership player to England international and has been metronomic this season. He has been major influence on a highly successful Harlequins team this season with his sniping ability, pace and crisp service. He lost place in the England team during six nations after careless sin binning against Ireland in Croke park, but he has learned from this and been in great form for Harlequins. I am sure he will be major contender as he boasts a different game to Ellis and Phillips and is in great form.

Mike Blair- Edinburgh and Scotland- Boots Adidas Predator Powerswerve Rugby

Mike Blair, the Scotland captain a year ago, was a shoe in to be in most peoples squad. However, a dip in form for both club and country have seen the scrum half fall down the pecking order. At his best, he was a world class performer with a great pass, defence and organisational abilities around the breakdown.

Lovell Rugby’s selection

Danny care- Form man with his pace could be ideal man to contrast on bench with Phillips size and Power.
