The Offload chats to... Noel Reid
March 15, 2017
To say this season is going well for Leinster, would it be putting it lightly. Sitting top of the PRO12 and with a home quarter-final in the Champions Cup, you may even say things are going to plan for the Dubliners.
At the heart of this success story is 26-year-old, Noel Reid. The versatile playmaker seems to be thriving at the moment, but he, like the rest of the squad, know that the success they’ve been tipped for won’t come without hard work from the squad as collective. We caught up with the man himself to talk boots, golf and what he gets up to in his spare time.
When you’re looking to pick up a new pair of boots, what sort of things do you look for?
Personally, as I spend a lot of time in my boots they must be comfortable. The last thing you want is to be in a game and start worrying about what kit! For me, Nike have always been the most comfortable and every boot they release looks pretty good which is a bonus.
Leinster are currently sitting at the top of the PRO12, what’s the feeling like in the camp at the moment?
There’s a real buzz around camp at the moment. Our first goal is to secure a home semi-final spot so everyone’s working hard towards achieving that. With a few boys out on international duty we have a few young players stepping up which is strengthening the squad.
Who is the toughest player you’ve come up against?
That’s a hard one as there’s no shortage of tough men about at the moment, but I think for me, it’s Paul O’Connell. He was one hell of an athlete and competitor. A Munster legend, he was a great player and as tough as they come.
Who was your favourite player when you were growing up?
Being a fly half/centre, I loved watching Carlos Spencer when he was at the Blues in New Zealand. He wasn’t afraid of trying things on the pitch, like running out from his own try line or passing between his legs.
“I’m #TeamDave all the way! Rob is always with his missus!”
We see that you like a round of golf; would you say that you were the best golfer in the Leinster squad?
A few of the Leinster boys enjoy a round in our spare time but I’m definitely not the best going on current form. Fergus McFadden fancies himself at the moment!
When you’re not training, or playing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
To keep the energy levels up I drink a lot of coffee, so going out for coffee with the boys takes up most of the day!
You’re a big Conor McGregor supporter. Do you think “The Notorious” would be any good on the rugby pitch?
He’s a hell of an athlete isn’t he! Both in and out of the octagon he’s feisty and very committed. If I had to put him in a team, I think he’d make a good scrum half.
Who would win in the Octagon between Sean O’ Brien and Cian Healy?
Tough call between two big units. I’d have to go with Cian Healy though, sorry Sean!
Which one of the Kearney brothers do you prefer and why? Are you #TeamRob or #TeamDave?
I’m #TeamDave all the way! Rob is always with his missus!
