The Offload’s Top 3 Super Rugby Performers from Round 15
July 04, 2017
Super Rugby was back this weekend with the South African teams, Jaguares and Sunwolves all in action, while the Australasian teams sat this one out.
The Bulls put in a fantastic display against the Sharks at Kings Park, the Kings conquered the Jaguares in Buenos Aires, the Lions ran in 14 tries against a below par Sunwolves at Ellis Park and the Stormers edged the Cheetahs in a thriller in Bloemfontein. We’ve been back through the action to pick out our top 3 performers from week 15 of Super Rugby.
The Lions Flankers
Individually they are great players but in tandem, Kwagga Smith and Jaco Kriel seem to be unstoppable. Scoring 4 of the Lions 14 tries (2 each), the pair had a field day in the loose seeing them both run for over 100 meters against a Sunwolves team that, let’s be honest, will be happy to know that the end of the season is near. With Kriel and Smith running the show in the pack combined with some exciting backs, the Lions will be serious contenders to take the Super Rugby title this year.
Coming off the back of a superb Springbok series against the French, Serfontein continued to flourish in the midfield this week for the Bulls. The Sharks struggled to contain the young centre, who set up two tries and looked a big threat every time he touched the ball. With the Bok coming back into form and his partnership with Jesse Kriel finally blossoming, the Bulls will be gutted to say goodbye to Serfontein at the end of the campaign.
Combrink is the best winger in South Africa – it’s as simple as that. The Springboks could have done with him against France and his club side has, at times, missed his physicality. The bulky winger hasn’t been back for long but it’s clear that any team with Combrinck in it is a better team. The Bok scored a stunning hat-trick and always looked busy in his sides thumping of the Sunwolves. Expect the big man to play a big part in this year’s Rugby Championship.
