Tonga Team Up with Mizuno
November 29, 2016
We’re the best part of 3 years away from the 2019 Rugby World Cup, but preparations have already begun for ‘Ikale Tahi’ boys.
The pre-match ‘Sipi Tau’ and Pacific Island flair that they play with remains the same, but the shirt that they are doing it in has changed. The Tongan Rugby Union have signed a deal with Mizuno to manufacture their kit for the coming 3 years, and we’ve got to say that their first attempt on the home and alternate shirts are spot on.
A full red body is accompanied by white Polynesian detailing on the arms and shoulders, giving it a tradition Tongan look and feel. The temptation would have been there to go over the top with the graphic, but the design team have kept it stylish and subtle, which we think makes for a classy looking shirt. Taking pride of place on the front of the shirt is the teams crest, the white dove.
For anyone that didn’t catch their match against Italy, it couldn’t have gone much better for Tonga or Mizuno. A week after turning over the Springboks, the Italians were pretty confident heading into their clash with the Tongans. Unfortunately for the Azzurri, the visitors wanted to mark their new shirts debut with a W. A try from Siale Piutau and 14 points from the boot of Sonatane Takulua helped them to a 19-17 victory, their first win over Italy since their first match-up back at the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
