Talking boots with... Kevin Sinfield
May 29, 2012
In an impressive career that lasted 20 years, it’s fair to say that Kevin Sinfield went through his fair share of boots in his playing days.
Nicknamed ‘Sir Kev’ by the Leeds Rhinos faithful, Sinfield has now swapped his boots for a more formal footwear working as a Rugby Director for the Rugby Football League. We recently caught up with the Super League’s all-time leading point’s scorer to chat rugby boots; from his first pair to his favourites.
What can you remember about the first pair of boots that you bought?
They were an old pair of the Mitre Dragon that were given to me by my older brothers friend. They were massive and I had to stick newspaper in the toes!
What did you look for when choosing a pair of boots? & did your requirements change as your career went on?
I looked for a light and bright pair. When I started off, most pairs were all black but I always wanted the black ones with the most colours on them. My taste didn’t change from light and bright!
Nowadays a lot of players look for flashy boots, how important was colour when you were boot shopping?
I loved colour, but like I said above all the boots were black until I was around 20!!
Have you kept any boots from memorable games/seasons?
No – I use to give the ‘memorable’ pairs away to charity.
Do you have a favourite pair of boots from your playing days?
Yes, my final pair of Canterbury boots. They were light, bright and comfortable.
If you could’ve added a super-feature to your boots, what would it have been?
Super speed- no substitute for pace in Rugby!!
