Over the last two years, adidas have been keeping themselves busy working alongside some of the world’s top rugby players, coaches and biomechanical experts. This has culminated in the ground-breaking release of the adidas FF80 Pro XTRX SG Rugby Boot – designed to power across the game line and ready to tackle anything on the field.
Created to increase all-important traction in scrums, rucks and mauls; the FF80 has been designed with a unique 5×2 stud configuration to cater to the requirements of specialist flankers and number 8 forwards. With the simple inclusion of an extra stud under the front of the boot, this provides a solid platform for explosive acceleration whilst also allowing loose forwards to be quicker to the breakdown.
The concept of the FF80 came about following a perceived lack of stability and grip amongst loose forwards when competing in scrums and rucks. With the modern game bringing a whole new level of power, agility and physicality, adidas research found that flankers need to change direction quickly in order to make tackles and reach breakdowns.
With the blessing of the IRB, the addition of an extra stud was soon put into reality in order to achieve more contact between the boot and the pitch. The additional stud has been strategically positioned to create what adidas refers to as a ‘stability triangle’, positioned on the inside-front of the rugby boot.
Although the defining feature of the FF80 revolves around the extra stud, other features also contribute to making this an exceptional high performance rugby boot. Made from a lightweight Singmax upper, this ensures a strong feel across the foot and delivers comfort from the moment you slip them on whilst the Sprintframe construction allows for the perfect balance between being lightweight and stable, with the gradual heel raise making for a dynamic foot position.
Not ones to be complacent, adidas have also paid significant attention to the interior by way of a soft synthetic lining for added comfort, a pre-moulded EVA sockliner and an anti-slip EVA insert inside the back of the heel.
Designed for an imposing yet striking appearance on the field, the urban sky tone to the front of the upper makes way for a more traditional black look towards the middle and back of the boot. To liven up proceedings, adidas have decorated their signature three stripes in vivid yellow blazing along each side whilst the FF80 branding receives the same colour treatment around the heel.
Compatible with the adidas miCoach chip, which fits discreetly beneath the inner sole, your boots now have the ability to report back on all your progress in training and match environments. Time, speed, distance, speed zones and number of sprints are all recorded and can be monitored by simply connecting the miCoach chip to your PC, iPhone or tablet. There’s nowhere to hide now as your every move is monitored.
Amongst the impressive roster of adidas athletes and teams, including the New Zealand All Blacks and their star players Richie McCaw and Dan Carter, Wales international Sam Warburton leads the glowing reviews of the FF80. ”I find the extra stud to be of real benefit when scrummaging and also in general play, especially when having to quickly change direction. Overall I think the performance of the outsole is better than a 4×2 boot as I find it much more stable and the extra stud gave me much better traction.” commented the back-row forward.
The FF80 is available to purchase now and forms part of the rugby specific range of boots created by adidas. With a rugby boot for every position, you can be assured of the best performance when you step out onto the field.
